(S)-5-Isopropylmorpholin-3-one
To an ice cold suspension of 60% NaH (8.92 g, 223 mmol) in toluene (300 mL) was added L-Valinol (10 g, 97 mmol) in toluene (200 mL) in a dropwise manner.
The reaction mixture was slowly warmed to room temperature and was added ethyl 2-chloroacetate (11.88 g, 97 mmol) in toluene (50 mL) in a dropwise manner.
The reaction mixture was heated to reflux for 20 h.
Reaction mass was cooled to room temperature, quenched with 20 mL of water and concentrated under reduced pressure.
The crude was purified by flash chromatography (120 g silica gel column; 2% MeOH: CHCl3) to afford 74A (off-white solid, 10 g, 69.8 mmol, 72.0% yield). LC-MS Anal. Calc'd. for C7H13NO2, 143.1. found [M+H] 144.2, Tr=0.6 min (Method U).
