The field of dental materials is an interdisciplinaryarea that applies biology, chemistry, andphysics to the development, understanding, andevaluation of materials used in the practice ofdentistry. It is principally involved in restorativedentistry, prosthodontics, pedodontics, and orthodontics,and to a smaller extent in the other areasof practice. The field of dental materials hasadvanced rapidly with the application of technologiessuch as genetic engineering of filling materials,computer designing and machining of restorations,adhesive bonding to teeth, dentalimplants, and new types of restorative materials.
