Hemochromatosis protein HFE competes with transferrin for TFRC binding, and subsequently inhibits the intracellular import of iron. Mutations in HFE eliminate this competition and thereby result in increased cellular uptake of iron by TFRC . Anti-TFRC antibody is specific for TFRC in humans. |
