Overview: Acetophenone, also known as acetyl benzene, boiling point (℃):202.3, relative density (water =1):1.03(20℃), relative vapor density (air =1):4.14, is the simplest aromatic ketone, in which the aromatic nucleus (benzene ring) is directly connected to the carbonyl group. Present in the free state in the essential oils of some plants. 

Pure products are colorless crystals. Most of the commodities sold in the market are light yellow oily liquids. It has an aroma like hawthorn. Slightly soluble in water, easily soluble in a variety of organic solvents, can be volatilized with steam. Molecular structure of acetophenone: methyl C atom is bonded with sp3 hybrid orbital, benzene ring and carbonyl C atom are bonded with sp2 hybrid orbital. Acetophenone can undergo the addition reaction of carbonyl group, the reaction of alpha active hydrogen, and the electrophilic substitution reaction on the benzene ring, mainly to produce the metaproduct. Acetophenone can be prepared by the reaction of benzene with acetyl chloride, acetic anhydride or acetic acid under the catalysis of aluminum trichloride. In addition, when ethylbenzene is catalyzed to styrene, acetophenone is a by-product. 

Acetophenone is mainly used as a raw material for pharmaceutical and other organic synthesis, and is also used in the preparation of spices. Used to make soap and cigarettes, can also be used as cellulose ether, cellulose ester and resin solvent and plastic plasticizer, hypnotic. Nowadays, acetophenone is mostly obtained as a byproduct of the oxidation of isopropylbenzene to phenol and acetone, and it can also be prepared by the acetylation of benzene with acetyl chloride.

When used as a spice, it is hawthorn; Mimosa; Lilac and other flavoring ingredients, and widely used in soap flavor and tobacco flavor. For the synthesis of phenylglycolic acid; α-phenylindole; Isobuprofenic acid, etc., is also used as a plasticizer for plastics.
