Preparation of important monomers of synthetic fibers, synthetic resins, plastics and ion exchange resins; It can also be used as carpet lining agent, paper coating agent, adhesive, paint dispersion latex, etc. Ester derivatives of itaconic acid can be used for copolymerization of styrene or plasticizer of PVC.

1. It can be used as acid taste agent, pH regulator and metal chelating agent. It is an important intermediate in the chemical synthesis industry, and can be used to produce synthetic resin, rubber, plastic, lubricating oil additives, boiler scale remover, adhesive, detergent, herbicide, etc. Its esters are also important raw materials for plastic plasticizers.

2. In recent years, the research and application of synthetic copolymers with itaconic acid as monomer are more and more, and one important aspect is to use itaconic acid copolymers as water treatment agents and chemical cleaning agents. Copolymers with relative molecular weight of 500~200000 are obtained by aqueous solution polymerization of itaconic acid and acrylic acid or methacrylic acid. Copolymers with different relative molecular weight and composition have different properties and uses. Itaconic acid acrylic acid copolymer (mass ratio 90 ∶ 10) is used for online cleaning of circulating cooling water system, which can effectively remove thicker scale layer (0.01~1.7 mm thick). The hard scale containing 67% hydroxyapatite and 13% magnesium silicate is attached to the heating surface and treated with 100 mg/L itaconic acid acrylic acid copolymer (mass ratio 90 ∶ 10). The scale removal rate reaches 90%. However, when treated with sodium polyacrylate (average molecular weight is 4500), the scale removal rate is only 15.2%. Its descaling characteristics are: it can be carried out at the same time of normal operation of the equipment, the cleaning conditions are mild, there is no need to add acid to lower the PH value, and the cleaning time is slightly longer (generally 10~60 days).

3. As the comonomer of polyacrylonitrile, its synthetic fiber can improve the dyeing performance of synthetic fiber. It can also be used to prepare plasticizers, lubricating oil additives, dispersible emulsions of coatings, etc.
