Zineb is a carbamate fungicide used on edible crops and ornamentals. It has a low aqueous solubility, is relatively volatile and is not expected, based on its physico-chemical propoerties, to leach to groundwater. 

Structure

Zineb is a polymeric complex of zinc with a dithiocarbamate.The polymer is composed of Zn(dithiocarbamate)2 subunits linked by an ethylene (-CH2CH2-) backbone.A reference compound is [Zn(S2CNEt2)2]2, which features a pair of tetrahedral Zn centers  bridged by one sulfur center.

Uses

Zineb's uses include control of downy mildews, rusts, and redfire disease.In the US it was once registered as a "General Use Pesticide", however all registrations were voluntarily cancelled following an EPA special review.It continues to be used in many other countries. 

Environmental effects

Zineb is not usually persistent in soil or water systems. It has a low mammalian toxicity however, it may cause adverse reproduction/developement effects if ingested. It is moderately toxic to most fauna and flora.

Acute Health Effects

The following acute (short-term) health effects may oCcur immediately or shortly after exposure to Zineb:

Zineb can irritate the eyes on contact.Skin contact can cause irritation. Prolonged exposure may cause redness and a skin rash.Inhaling Zineb can irritate the nose and throat causing coughing and wheezing.Exposure to Zineb can cause headache, dizziness, nausea and vomiting.
