4 Example 4Synthesis of 4,4’-(4-chlorobutane-1,1-diyl)bis(fluorobenzene) [step (d) - compound (I)]
A solution of 4,4-bis(4-fluorophenyl)butan- 1 -ol obtained in the previous Example(218 g) and catalytic pyridine (0.10 g) in toluene (570 ml) under nitrogen was heatedat 80°C ±10°C. Thionyl chloride (57 g, 0.480 mol) was slowly added in 1-2 hours tothe solution, keeping the temperature at 80°C ±10°C. The reaction was further refluxed for 2-3 hours, till completion. Solvent was evaporated, 270 ml of toluene were added and the solvent was evaporated to afford a brown oil. The residue was distilled under vacuum (170-180°C /1-2 mBar). The title compound was obtained as a colorless oil (80 g).Purity>98(GC)Overall synthesis yield: 62.4%.111 NMR (200 MHz, CDC13): S 7.06-7.24 (m, 4H), 6.85-7.07 (m, 4H), 3.89 (t, J =7.9 Hz, 1H), 3.53 (t, J = 6.4 Hz, 211), 1.99-2.28 (m, 2H), 1.72 (dt, J = 17.3-6.6 Hz,211).El-MS mlz: 280[Mj+.
