Toasolutionof2-nitro-3-methylbenzoicacid(250mg,1.38mmol)inEtOH(2.80mL) was added 10% palladium on charcoal (8% w/w). The reaction mixture wassequentiallyevacuatedandpurgedwithhydrogenthreetimesthenstirredunderhydrogenat approximately atmospheric pressure and room temperature. The reaction wasmonitored by TLC and upon completion the catalyst was filtered off through a pad ofCeliteTM.Thesolventwasremovedinvacuotogive2-amino-3-methylbenzoicacid(206mg,1.36mmol,99%)asapalepinkamorphoussolid,withouttheneedforfurtherpurification;mp169-171°C,lit.170-172°C.
