Yield:-

Reaction Conditions:

with chloro-trimethyl-silane;sodium iodide in diethyl ether;acetonitrile

Steps:

2-Methyl-2-(4-hydroxyphenyl)methyl-1,3-dioxalane STR52
2-Methyl-2-(4-hydroxyphenyl)methyl-1,3-dioxalane STR52 To a mixture of sodium iodide (51 g) and 1-(4-benzyl-oxyphenyl)propan-2-one (53 g) in acetonitrile (250 ml) at 50° was added chlorotrimethylsilane (43 ml) with vigorous stirring. After 2 hours the reaction was cooled and quenched with methanol (25 ml). The solvent was evaporated and the residue dissolved in diethyl ether, the organic phase was washed with saturated sodium thiosulphate solution. Extraction of the resultant ethereal solution with sodium hydroxide solution (10% w/v), acidification of the aqueous phase, extraction with dichloromethane, drying and evaporation of the organic extract afforded 1-(4-hydroxyphenyl)-propan-2-one as an oil.
