General procedure: The compound was prepared according to a modified literature procedure.22 A mixture of imidazole (1.021 g, 15 mmol), anhydrous potassium carbonate (2.76 g, 20 mmol), copper iodide (0.119 g,1.0 mmol), 1,3-di(pyridin-2-yl)propane-1,3-dione (10.0 mmol), 4-haloacetophenone (10.0 mmol) and DMF (15 mL) was stirred for 30 min at room temperature under a nitrogen atmosphere. This wa sfollowed by heating at 110 °C for 12-18 h. After the completion of the reaction (as indicated by TLC), the contents were cooled to room temperature and passed through a plug of Celite. The filtrate was diluted with ethyl acetate (50 mL) and washed three times with saturated brine (10 mL each time). Treatment of the organic layer with activated charcoal and evaporation of the solvent under vacuum afforded the product: Yield (see Table 1); m.p. 115-116 °C (lit.22 114-116 °C).
