3.4 Synthetic procedures of 5-methyl-2-phenylfuran-3-carboxylic acid (6)
A solution of NaOH (2.002 g, 50 mmol) in H2O (5 mL) was slowly added to a solution of compound 5 (1.155 g, 5 mmol) in EtOH (15 mL). The reaction mixture was stirred at room temperature with TLC monitoring. After 7 h, ethanol was removed under reduced pressure and the residue was acidified to pH 1 with 6 M HCl. The mixture was further extracted with ethyl acetate (3 × 25 mL). The organic phase were combined and dried over anhydrous Na2SO4. After removal of the desiccant by filtration, the solution was condensed under reduced pressure to afford the phenylfuran acid intermediate 6. White solid, yield 88.2%,
