A mixture of phenyl(o-tolyl)methanone (0.8 g, 4.08 mmol), NBS (0.73 g, 4.76 mmol), AIBN (0.01 g) and tetrachloromethane (25 ml) was refluxed and monitored by Thin-Layer Chromatography until the reaction was over.
The excessive tetrachloromethane was evaporated under reduced pressure, the residual was purified by column chromatography on silica gel (eluent: ethyl acetate:petroleum ether=1:10; silica gel: 100-140 mesh, Qingdao Marine Chemical Co., Ltd.) to obtain (2-(bromomethyl)phenyl)(phenyl)methanone (0.95 g) with yield of 85%.
