Reaction Conditions:

Stage #1: 1,1-dichloro-3,3-dimethyl-1-butenewith n-butyllithium in n-heptane;toluene at 80 - 90; for 2.75 h;
Stage #2: (2E)-3-chloro-N-methyl-N-(naphthalen-1-ylmethyl)prop-2-en-1-amine;bis-triphenylphosphine-palladium(II) chloride in tetrahydrofuran at 90 - 95; for 4 h;Product distribution / selectivity;

The reaction described in example 6 is repeated, using 421 mg PdCl2(PPh3) (1.4 mol%) as a catalyst. The reaction mixture is heated at 90°-95°C for 4 hours and subsequently cooled to 20-25°C. Following the work-up described in example 6,14.2 g (greater than the theoretical yield), of crude terbinafine are obtained, with purity of 81.7% (HPLC A%).
