Indications and side effects of Naphazoline hydrochloride eye drops

Naphazoline hydrochloride is an imidazole derivative and a direct-acting sympathomimetic amine with vasoconstrictive properties. When administered ocularly, naphazoline hydrochloride produces vasoconstriction by acting on alpha-adrenergic receptors in the conjunctival arterioles, thereby reducing conjunctival congestion and alleviating symptoms of itching, irritation and redness.

Indications of Naphazoline hydrochloride Eye Drops

Naphazoline 0.1 % Eye Drops are indicated for the relief of redness, puffiness and itching/watering of the eyes caused by colds, allergies or eye irritation (smoke, swimming or wearing contact lenses). Pheniramine maleate 0.3 %/naphazoline hydrochloride 0.025 % ophthalmic solution is also used to treat allergic conjunctivitis.

Side Effects of Naphazoline hydrochloride Eye Drops

Possible side effects of Naphazoline hydrochloride include tingling, redness, dilated pupils, or blurred vision. Overuse or prolonged use can increase eye irritation and may be severe enough to cause eye pain, dizziness, nausea, sweating, drowsiness, weakness, nervousness, headache, drop in body temperature, and irregular heartbeat. Rare side effects include vision, large pupils, and symptoms of severe allergic reactions. Contact your doctor if you experience any serious symptoms.
