General procedure for the synthesis of ethyl 5-phenyl-2-thiazolecarboxylate from ethyl [2-phenyl-2-oxoethyl]amino-2-oxoacetate: To a solution of ethyl [2-phenyl-2-oxoethyl]amino-2-oxoacetate (5.0 g, 21.3 mmol) in trichloromethane (50 mL) was added diphosphorus pentasulfide (9.0 g, 42.6 mmol). The reaction mixture was stirred at 60 °C overnight. Upon completion of the reaction, the reaction mixture was quenched with ice water (100 mL) and subsequently extracted with dichloromethane. The organic layer was washed with brine, dried over anhydrous Na2SO4, filtered and concentrated to give the crude product. The crude product was purified by silica gel column chromatography eluting with appropriate eluent to afford ethyl 5-phenyl-2-thiazolecarboxylate (4.5 g, 90.8% yield). Mass spectrometric analysis (ESI) showed m/z: 234.1 [M + 1].
