Scandium carbide ScC2 : it is obtained by heating the oxide with carbon at 1273 K. Sc2O3+ 7C-->2ScC2+ 3CO lt is an acetylide because it reacts with water to liberate acetylene. ScC2+ H2O-->C2H2+ ScO.OH Earlier this carbide was considered to bc divalent Sc2+(C=C)2-. Recently it has been shown byconductivity and magnetic measurements that it contains Sc2+ and (C2)2-ions. |
