The commercial production of the pesticide D-D primarily involves the high-temperature radical chlorination of propylene or, more commonly in modern processes, the allylic chlorination of allyl chloride (produced from propylene) with chlorine gas. This reaction yields a mixture of cis- and trans-1,3-dichloropropene as the main active components, along with by-products such as 1,2-dichloropropene and hydrogen chloride.
