Hazard InformationBack Directory
[General Description]

Straw to amber liquid with a pungent, garlic-like odor. Sinks and slowly mixes with water.
[Air & Water Reactions]

Highly flammable.
[Reactivity Profile]

Halogenated aliphatic compounds, such as DICHLOROPROPANE - DICHLOROPROPENE, are moderately or very reactive. Reactivity generally decreases with increased degree of substitution of halogen for hydrogen atoms. Low molecular weight haloalkanes are highly flammable and can react with some metals to form dangerous products. Materials in this group are incompatible with strong oxidizing and reducing agents. Also, they are incompatible with many amines, nitrides, azo/diazo compounds, alkali metals, and epoxides. Behavior in Fire: Can react with aluminum, magnesium and their alloys. Can generate highly irritating and explosive vapors [USCG, 1999].
[Health Hazard]

Toxic; may be fatal if inhaled, swallowed or absorbed through the skin. Inhalation causes gasping, refusal to breathe and respiratory distress. Contact may cause burns to skin and eyes. Ingestion may cause acute gastrointestinal distress with congestion and edema of the lungs.
[Description]

D-D is an organochlorine multi-use pesticide. It is highly soluble in water but little other data relating to its environmental fate is available. D-D is moderately toxic to fish and is also moderately toxic to mammals if ingested. It is also an irritant.
[Production Methods]

The commercial production of the pesticide D-D primarily involves the high-temperature radical chlorination of propylene or, more commonly in modern processes, the allylic chlorination of allyl chloride (produced from propylene) with chlorine gas. This reaction yields a mixture of cis- and trans-1,3-dichloropropene as the main active components, along with by-products such as 1,2-dichloropropene and hydrogen chloride. The crude product undergoes fractional distillation to isolate and purify the desired 1,3-dichloropropene isomers, which are then stabilised (e.g., with epichlorohydrin or epoxidised oils) and formulated into the final commercial product
[Mechanism of action]

Multi-action. Disrupts cellular respiration
[Pesticide Type]

Insecticide; Nematicide; Herbicide; Fungicide
