3-methyl-5-phenylpent-2-enenitrile is a colorless liquid
with a citrus-fruity, slightly balsamic odor. The commercial product is a 2 : 3
mixture of the (Z)-and (E)-isomers.
The nitrile is prepared by condensation of benzylacetone with cyanoacetic acid
in the presence of pyridine and by elimination of carbon dioxide.The mixture is
