Description
This alkaloid from Papaver somniferum was obtained by Mayer and subsequently by Beckett and Wright, the latter workers isolating it from crude narceine. When oxidized with FeCl3 it yields cotarnine and hemipinic acid. It is now generally accepted as being identical with nornarceine.
