Chemical Properties
Clary is a biennial or perennial plant cultivated for extractive purposes in the Mediterranean basin, central Europe and Russia. It is about 1.5 m tall with a taproot; hairy erect stalk; wide, woody, oval leaves; and white or light-violet flowers (July) in terminal clusters. The flowering tops and leaves are the parts used. Clary has an herb-like odor and wine-like taste.

Clary is a perennial found in Europe.
Uses
Clary is used as an antiinfl ammatory to decrease muscle and nervous tension; an antispasmodic; a sedative; an astringent; and as a treatment for menopausal symptoms, premenstrual syndrome, decreased libido, and fatigue. It is also used to stimulate the adrenals and, in Europe, as a remedy for sore throat.
Essential oil composition
The oil contains C6, C7, C8 and C9 aldehydes, benzoic aldehyde, linalyl acetate, α- and β-pinene and camphene. The main constituents are linalyl acetate and linalool.
