Martensite Chemical Properties,Uses,Production

Definition

The chief constituent of hardened carbon tool steels. It is a solution of carbon or Fe 3C in β-iron, or an exceedingly fine-grained α- iron with carbon or Fe 3C in atomic or molecular dispersion. Carbon content up to 1%; easily obtained by quenching small bodies of hypereutectoid steel in cold water; more difficult to obtain in low-carbon steels.

Definition

martensite: A solid solution of carbonin alpha-iron (see iron) formedwhen steel is cooled too rapidly forpearlite to form from austenite. It isresponsible for the hardness ofquenched steel.
