Methanol adhesive Chemical Properties,Uses,Production
Description
Methanol adhesive, also known as carbinol adhesive, is a gelatinous resin obtained by polymerization of dimethyl vinylethynyl methanol (DMVEM) monomer under the initiation of benzoyl peroxide.
Chemical Properties
Methanol adhesive(DMVEM) is a colorless liquid with a boiling point of 50–51°C under a pressure of 9–10 mmHg. The refractive index is in the range from 1.4750 to 1.4765 at 20°C. Usually, a small amount of polymerization inhibitor is added to the monomer to prevent it from self-polymerization during storage.
Uses
Methanol adhesive is characterized by high tensile strength (about 200 kg.cm–2), excellent oil resistance or cold resistance; especially it can be bonded at room temperature, so it has been widely used in aviation industry, optical industry and machinery manufacturing industry. However, it also has some shortcomings, mainly that it is poor in resistance to water and organic solvent, and is not resistant to high temperatures. It is not ideal under the conditions of bearing shear stress and bending stress.
Synthesis
DMVEM is produced by a condensation reaction of vinylacetylene and acetone in
the presence of potassium hydroxide powder catalyst:
