Grayish-black orthogonal crystals or powder; density 7.23 g/cm3; Moh’s hardness 2.3; melts at 825°C; insoluble in water; soluble in nitric and sulfuric acids.
Occurrence and Uses
Silver sulfide occurs in nature as mineral argentite. It is used in ceramics.
Preparation
Mineral argentite is mined from mineral deposits, crushed, ground, and washed for use. In the laboratory, silver sulfide is obtained by passing hydrogen sulfide gas through a solution of silver nitrate. The precipitate is washed with hot water.

Grayish-black powder.Soluble in concentrated sulfuric and nitric acids; insoluble in water.

Uses
Silver sulfide is a brownish back powder formed by the combination of an alkaline sulfide with silver. It is a very stable compound made when toning silver-based images in sulfides. It is soluble in sulfuric and nitric acids but insoluble in water and alcohol.
Uses
Silver sulfide is useful as a photosensitizer in photography, Intermediates, chemical research.
Uses
Inlaying in niello metalwork, ceramics.
