It has a role as an Escherichia coli metabolite. It is a 4-hydroxy monocarboxylic acid, a 2-hydroxy monocarboxylic acid, a 4-oxo monocarboxylic acid, a 5-hydroxy monocarboxylic acid and a secondary alpha-hydroxy ketone.
