Chemical Properties
FIR NEEDLE OIL, CANADIAN is found in the needles and twigs of Abies balsamea L. Mill (family Pinaceae). Colorless to faintly yellow liquid; pleasant odor. Sol in fixed oils, mineral oil; sltly sol in propylene glycol; insol in glycerin.
Physical properties
The oil is an almost colorless to very slightly yellow liquid.
Occurrence
Found in the leaves of Abies balsamea (L.) Mill. (Fam: Pinaceae) (Guenther, 1952).
Uses
FIR NEEDLE OIL, CANADIAN is food additive.
Preparation
By steam distillation of the needles and twigs of A . balsamea (Fenaroli's Handbook of Flavor Ingredients, 1971).
Essential oil composition
Main constituents of silver fur needles and twig oil include l-α-pinene, l-limonene, l-bornyl acetate, lauric and decyclic aldehydes, and probably a sesquiterpene.
