解説
牧草として利用するマメ科の多年草で，アカツメクサ，ムラサキツメクサともいう。原産地はアジア西部から中東地域で，南ヨーロッパには13世紀に伝わったが，ヨーロッパ全域に普及したのは18世紀になってからである。日本には18世紀にオランダから伝わったが，牧草として栽培されたのは明治初期アメリカからの導入以降である。今では各地の野原や路傍に野生化しているものもある。 株立ちになる茎に互生する葉は3枚の小葉からなる複葉で，長い柄がある。

使用
Depending on the part of the plant used (flower; stem; leaf; flowers, stems, and leaves combined) and the format of the ingredient (extract, powder, juice) properties can range from exfoliant (red clover flower powder), to anti-oxidant (seed extract), to generally improving overall skin condition (general extract). Thus, it can be used for a variety of purposes in any number of formulations. Red clover has been described as beneficial for acne and eczema. Isoflavones are among its constituents.
