24ステロイド系カルボン酸の総称．コレステロールの側鎖切断と水酸化によって生合成される．ヒトの胆汁に含まれるのはコール酸，デオキシコール酸，ケノデオキシコール酸，リトコール酸の4種．胆汁酸は界面活性剤としての作用をもち，食物中の脂質を乳化させ，その消化・吸収を助ける．胆汁中に分泌されるときはタウリン，グリシンなどと結合してタウロコール酸，グリココール酸などの形となる．
定義
An acid found in bile (secretion of the liver). Bile acids are steroids having a hydroxyl group and a five-carbon-atom side chain terminating in a carboxyl group. Cholic acid is the most abundant bile acid in human bile. Others are deoxycholic and lithocholic acids. The bile acids do not occur free in bile but are linked to the amino acids glycine and taurine. These conjugated acids are water soluble. Their salts are powerful detergents and as such aid in the absorption of fats from the intestine.
