Polyester resins are primarily used in large castingssuch as those required in the motion pictureindustry or for large sculptures for museums,parks, and display purposes. Since polyestershrinkage is about 0.024 to 0.032 mm/mm, castingsare usually reinforced with glass cloth ormat and are generally cast in a flexible mold.Catalysts used to initiate the cure are peroxidesor hydroperoxides and activators are cobaltnaphthanate, alkyl mereaptans, or dialkyl aromaticamines. Recently, isophthalic polyestershave been introduced containing isophthalicacid, which provides improved heat, chemical,and impact resistance.
Clear polyester castings can be made usingdiallyl or triallyl cyanurate type polyesters. Triallylcyanurate polyesters are used in castingclear sheets because they have excellent scratchand heat resistance.
