ビオタ，バイオタともいう。ある地方に生息する動･植物の種類組成をさす。動･植物に分けて動物相，植物相，さらに類別して，鳥相，哺乳類相，昆虫相，あるいは環境別にとらえて，森林動物相，ブナ林鳥類相，また潮間帯生物相などと限定できる。生物相は，何が(種類)，どこに(地理分布)，どんな環境に(生態分布)，どのくらい(密度，生物量)いるかを明らかにし，さらに食物連鎖などによる群集構造としての把握，その系列におけるエネルギーの流れ(群集経済)，種間の社会関係(群集機能)などの分析に進むために不可欠の基礎データである。
