Use
Babbitt metal is the original name for tin–antimony–copper(Sn–Sb–Cu) white alloys used for machinerybearings, the term now applies to almost anywhite bearing alloy with either tin or lead (Pb)base. As a general-utility bearingmetal, the original alloy has never beenimproved greatly, and makers frequently designatethe tin-base alloys close to this compositionas genuine babbitt.Commercial white bearing metals nowknown as babbitt are of three general classes:tin-base, with more than 50% tin hardened withantimony and copper, and used for heavy-dutyservice; intermediate, with 20 to 50% tin, withlower compressive strength and more sluggishbehavior as a bearing; and lead-base, made usuallywith antimonial lead with smaller amountsof tin together with other elements to hold thelead in solution.
