Use
Clindamycin palmitate hydrochloride (Cleocin Pediatric) isthe hydrochloride salt of the palmitic acid ester ofcleomycin. The ester bond is to the 2-hydroxyl group of thelincosamine sugar. The ester serves as a tasteless prodrugform of the antibiotic, which hydrolyzes to clindamycin inthe plasma. The salt form confers water solubility to theester, which is available as granules for reconstitution intoan oral solution for pediatric use. Although absorption of thepalmitate is slower than that of the free base, there is littledifference in overall bioavailability of the two preparations.Reconstituted solutions of the palmitate hydrochloride arestable for 2 weeks at room temperature. Such solutionsshould not be refrigerated because thickening occurs thatmakes the preparation difficult to pour.
