Somatrem (Protropin) is abiosynthetic form of human GH that differs from the pituitary-derived GH and recombinant somatotropin by additionof an extra amino acid, methionine. Because of its structuraldifference from the natural GH, patients receiving somatremmay develop antibodies, which may result in a decreasedresponse to it. Somatrem is administered intramuscularly orsubcutaneously, and the therapy is continued as long as thepatient responds, until the patient reaches mature adultheight, or until the epiphyses close. The dosage range is 0.05to 0.1 IU.
