| POTASSIUM HEXAHYDROXOANTIMONATE(V) Usage And Synthesis |
Uses | Potassium antimonyl trihydrate is used as a detecting agent for sodium. It is used as a mordant/ fixing agent in leather and textile dying industries. It is also used as a analytical reagent and flux additive for electroplating. | Preparation | Heating antimony pentoxide with excess potassium hydroxide produces rubbery, granular, or crystalline products. If the substance is recrystallized from a little water, deliquescent mammilated crystals form. Treated with copious cold water or boiled together with a small quantity of water, they are converted into potassium hexahydroxyantimonate, K[Sb(OH)6], which is sparingly soluble in cold water but somewhat more soluble in warm water. Solutions precipitate sodium as the sparingly soluble sodium hexahydroxyantimonate, Na[Sb(OH)6]. This reaction is used for the detection of sodium.
