| | General Description | Lectins are proteins of plant origin, which have the ability to bind to certain neuronal surface glycoproteins and glycolipids. This ability of theirs helps them to be used as neuroanatomical tracers, as they are taken and transported in a retrograde or anterograde fashion. | | Biochem/physiol Actions | Lectin agglutinates cells and precipitates polysaccharides and glycoproteins. It has anti-cancer, anti-human immunodeficiency virus (anti-HIV) and anti-microbial infection properties. Lectin is associated with toxic allergens and hemagglutinins. Lectin inhibits mucosal atrophy, lowers type 2 diabetes and obesity, enhances nutrient absorption and regulates drug targeting. |
