Methylacetylene and propadiene mixture, stabilized Usage And Synthesis
DescriptionThismixtureofC3H4isomersisa flammable,colorlessgaswithastrong,characteristic,foulodor.Theodorthreshold is 100 ppm.Boiling point=38 to 20℃; Freezing/ Melting point=136℃; Relative vapor density (air= 1)= 1.48. Explosive limits: LEL= 3.4%; UEL= 10.8%. Hazard Identification(basedonNFPA-704MRatingSystem):Health0, Flammability 0, Reactivity 0. Insoluble in water. A fuel that is shipped as a liquefied compressed gas mixture containing 606.5%methylacetyleneandpropadiene;thebalanceisbutane andpropane.
Chemical PropertiesColorless, liquefied gas.A mixture containing 60–66.5% methylacetylene and propadiene, with the balance being propane and butane.
UsesIndustrial fuel gas for cutting, welding, brazing, heat treating, and metallizing.
General DescriptionMethylacetylene-propadiene stabilized is a colorless gas with an acetylene like odor. Methylacetylene and propadiene mixture, stabilized is shipped as a liquefied gas under its vapor pressure. Contact with the liquid can cause frostbite. Methylacetylene and propadiene mixture, stabilized is easily ignited. The vapors are heavier than air. Any leak can either be liquid or vapor. Methylacetylene and propadiene mixture, stabilized can asphyxiate by the displacement of air. Under prolonged exposure to fire or intense heat the containers may rupture violently and rocket.
Air & Water ReactionsHighly flammable.
Reactivity ProfileMETHYLACETYLENE-PROPADIENE GAS MIXTURE presents a dangerous fire and explosion hazard when exposed to heat, flame or sparks or strong oxidizing agents. The liquid material in cylinders contains about 30% propadiene. Detonation may occur at 95°C [MCA Case History No. 632]. Reacts vigorously with strong oxidizing agents. Reaction with silver nitrate forms an acetylide igniting at 150°C [Grignard, 1935, vol. 3, p. 175]. Violent explosions occurring at low temperatures in ammonia synthesis equipment have been traced to the addition products of dienes and oxides of nitrogen produced from the interaction of nitrogen oxide and oxygen. [Bretherick, 1995].
HazardFlammable gas; dangerous fire risk. Toxic by inhalation. Central nervous system impairment.
Health HazardSimple asphyxiant. Toxicology of propadiene component not fully established. Contact with liquid may burn eyes and cause frostbite of skin.
Fire HazardBehavior in Fire: Containers may explode.
Safety ProfileA flammable gas mixture. To fight fire, stop flow of gas. When heated to decomposition it emits acrid smoke and irritating fumes.
Potential ExposureThis mixture is used as an industrial cutting fuel.
First aidIf this chemical gets into the eyes, remove any contact lenses at once and irrigate immediately for at least 15 min, occasionally lifting upper and lower lids. Seek medical attention immediately. If this chemical contacts the skin, remove contaminated clothing and wash immediately with soap and water. Seek medical attention immediately. If this chemical has been inhaled, remove from exposure, begin rescue breathing (using universal precautions, including resuscitation mask) if breathing has stopped and CPR if heart action has stopped. Transfer promptly to a medical facility. When this chemical has been swallowed, get medical attention. Give large quantities of water and induce vomiting. Do not make an unconscious person vomit. If frostbite has occurred, seek medical attention immediately; do NOT rub the affected areas or flush them with water. In order to prevent further tissue damage, do NOT attempt to remove frozen clothing from frostbitten areas. If frostbite has NOT occurred, immediately and thoroughly wash contaminated skin with soap and water.
storageColor Code—Red Stripe: Flammability Hazard: Store separately from all other flammable materials. Prior to working with this chemical you should be trained on its proper handling and storage. Before entering confined space where this chemical may be present, check to make sure that an explosive concentration does not exist. Store in tightly closed containers in a cool, well-ventilated area away from oxidizers. Sources of ignition, such as smoking and open flames, are prohibited where this chemical is used, handled, or stored in a manner that could create a potential fire or explosion hazard. Wherever this chemical is used, handled, manufactured, or stored, use explosionproof electrical equipment and fittings. Procedures for the handling, use and storage of cylinders should be in compliance with OSHA 1910.101 and 1910.169, as with the recommendations of the Compressed Gas Association.
ShippingThis compound requires a shipping label of “FLAMMABLE GAS.” It falls in Hazard Class 2.1.
IncompatibilitiesStrong oxidizers, copper alloys. Forms explosive compounds at high pressure in contact with alloys containing more than 67% copper.
