| Biological Activity | Neuroligin-4, X-linked (NLGN4X) is a postsynaptic cell adhesion protein involved in synaptogenesis. It is highly expressed in heart tissues. Its expression also has been found in liver, skeletal muscle, pancreas, and brain at low levels. It consists of an N-terminal signal peptide, the esterase like domain with two sites of alternative splicing (designated A and B), a small linker region of low sequence identity in front of the transmembrane domain, and a short cytosolic part with a highly conserved C-terminus. In presence of Ca2+, the neurolignins can bind to the lamininneurexin-sex hormone binding globulin (LNS) domains of α-neurexins and β-neurexins, which generates heterophilic trans-synaptic recognition code. Mutations in the neuroligin is involved in autism and mental retardation. |
