| Preparation | Obtained by heating 4-hydroxy-4?-nitrodiphenylmethane (SM), sulfur and sodium hydroxide in 50% ethanol in a boiling water bath for 7 h (60%). In this reaction, oxidation of the methylene group to a carbonyl group occurred together with reduction of the nitro group. The oxidizing agent for the methylene group was the tetrasulfide. SM was obtained by diazotization of 4-amino-4?-nitrodiphenylmethane (83%). |
