| Neopentyl glycol diglycidyl ether Usage And Synthesis |
Chemical Properties | colourless liquid | Uses | NGDE can be used in the synthesis of epoxy polymers for the development of shape memory polymers. It can also be used in the photopolymerization of cationic polymers. | Uses | Thismay be used as a bifunctional reactive diluent
for viscosity reduction of resins with minimum change
in cured resin properties and to allow increased filler
incorporation. | Uses | Neopentyl Glycol Diglycidyl Ether is used in preparation of aqueous Epoxy curing agents for orange peel-like leveling coatings. | Production Methods | The ether is made by condensing neopentyl glycol with
epichlorohydrin followed by dehydrochlorination with
caustic. | General Description | Clear liquid. | Air & Water Reactions | Slightly soluble in water. | Reactivity Profile | Neopentyl glycol diglycidyl ether is a ether-alcohol derivative. The ether being relatively unreactive. Flammable and/or toxic gases are generated by the combination of alcohols with alkali metals, nitrides, and strong reducing agents. They react with oxoacids and carboxylic acids to form esters plus water. Oxidizing agents convert alcohols to aldehydes or ketones. Alcohols exhibit both weak acid and weak base behavior. They may initiate the polymerization of isocyanates and epoxides. | Fire Hazard | Neopentyl glycol diglycidyl ether is combustible. | Carcinogenicity | A 2 year dermal carcinogenicity
study of NPGDGE in C3H mice was conducted at dose levels
of 0.94, 1.87, and 3.75 mg/mouse . Skin tumor incidences
were 10/50, 6/50, and 0/50 at 3.75, 1.87, and 0.94 mg/
mouse; no tumors occurred in the 300 acetone-treated controls.
Tumor potency was calculated to be 1/700th that of
benzo[a]pyrene, which was tested concurrently. | Toxics Screening Level | Due to a lack of available toxicity data, the screening level for Neopentyl glycol diglycidyl ether is being set at 0.1 μg/m3 with annual averaging. |
