Eseroline is an opioid intermediate that is a metabolite of the acetylcholinesterase inhibitor physostigmine. However, unlike physostigmine, oxidized physostigmine has unusual pharmacological characteristics. The inhibitory effect on acetylcholinesterase produced is very weak and easily reversible, and it can produce quite strong analgesic effects mediated through μ-opioid receptors. The upstream products of oxidized physostigmine include methyl isocyanate, phenyl isocyanate, and 4-isopropylphenyl isocyanate, and its downstream products include physostigmine and phenylserine.
