   Potassium iodide is commonly known as gray iodine. Chemical formula KI. Molecular weight 166.00. Colorless or white cubic crystals. It tastes salty and bitter. There is slight deliquescence in humid air, and when exposed to air, it is easily oxidized, releasing iodine and gradually turning yellow. Light and moisture can accelerate its decomposition. The specific gravity is 3.13. Melting point 681 ℃. Boiling point 1330 ℃. Easy to dissolve in water, soluble in ethanol, methanol, acetone, glycerol, and liquid ammonia, slightly soluble in ether. Its aqueous solution is neutral or slightly alkaline, and it can dissolve iodine to generate triiodide ions (I3-). Its aqueous solution is also prone to oxidation and yellowing, especially in acidic conditions, which can be prevented by adding alkali. Obtained by the reaction of hydroiodic acid and potassium bicarbonate. Used as analytical reagents and raw materials for the production of iodides and dyes, as well as photographic emulsifiers, food additives, etc. In medicine, it is used to prevent and treat goiter (neck disease), as well as for preoperative preparation of hyperthyroidism. In addition, it can also be used as an expectorant, diuretic, etc.
