Sodium thiosulfate, also sodium sulfite, soda, sea waves (from its alias sodium hyposulfite), 

molecular formula: Na2S2O3·5H2O. It is a common thiosulfate, colorless transparent monoclinic 

crystal with a density of 1.667 g/cm 3. The melting point at standard atmospheric pressure is 48 

degrees Celsius. Sodium thiosulfate is soluble in water and reacts with strong acids to produce 

sulfur :

Sodium Hyposulfite (Na2S2O3), also spelled sodium thiosulphate, is an inorganic compound 

that is typically available as the pentahydrate, Na2S2O3·5H2O. The solid is an efflorescent

 (loses water readily) crystalline substance that dissolves well in water. It is also called sodium 

hyposulfite or "hypo".It is on the World Health Organization's List of Essential Medicines, 

the most important medications needed in a basic health system.

Application

Mainly used in photographic industry as a fixer. Secondly, it is used as a reducing agent for dichromate when tanning leather, a neutralizing agent for nitrogen-containing tail gas, a mordant, a bleaching agent for wheat straw and wool, and a dechlorinating agent for pulp bleaching. It is also used in the manufacture of dye intermediates, etc. and the extraction of silver from ore. 

It is mainly used as fixing agent in photography industry. Secondly, it is used as reducing agent of dichromate in tanning leather, neutralizing agent of nitrogen tail gas, mordant, bleaching agent of wheat stalk and wool, and dechlorination agent in bleaching of paper pulp. It is also used in the manufacture , dye intermediates and ore silver extraction.
