The protein has a calculated MW of 67.4 kDa. The protein migrates as 66 kDa under reducing (R) condition (SDS-PAGE) due to glycosylation.

血清白蛋白（SA）也称为ALB，是血浆的主要蛋白质，对水、Ca2+、Na+、K+、脂肪酸、激素、胆红素和药物具有良好的结合能力。SA的主要功能是调节血液的胶体渗透压。作为血浆中的主要锌转运蛋白，SA通常结合所有血浆锌的约80%。白蛋白的变异结构可能导致锌结合增加，导致血液中锌浓度无症状增加。血清白蛋白缺陷可导致家族性蛋白异常高铁血症，这是一种甲状腺功能正常的高铁血症形式，是由于血清白蛋白对T4的亲和力增加所致。它是高加索人群中遗传性甲状腺功能正常高甲状腺素血症的最常见原因。
