L-5-methyltetrahydrofolate calcium (5-MTHF) is a salt-forming methyl derivative naturally produced by folic acid. 5-MTHF is also known as L-methylfolate. Form, easier to absorb than ordinary folic acid. There are two main metabolic pathways that ordinary folic acid must be converted to L-methyl folic acid: methylation process and DNA synthesis. The only form of free folic acid usually present in human plasma and cells is 5-MTHF.
