What is dimethyl sulfide used for? Is it harmful?
Dec 13,2024
Dimethyl sulfide is an organic substance with the chemical formula C2H6S. It is the simplest sulfide and the sulfur analog of methyl ether. It is a colorless liquid. Its vapor can form an explosive mixture with air. It is very easy to burn and explode when exposed to open flames and high heat. It decomposes under high heat to produce toxic sulfide smoke. It can react strongly with oxidants and react with water, water vapor, acid, etc. to produce toxic and flammable gases. Its vapor is heavier than air and can spread to a considerable distance at low altitude. It will catch fire and burn back when it encounters a fire source.
What is dimethyl sulfide used for?
1. Presulfurizing agent for petroleum hydrodesulfurization catalyst;
2. Anti-carbon deposition additive during the contact decomposition process of petroleum;
3. Pesticide raw materials, production of insecticide "fenthion"; it has contact and stomach poisoning effects on pests, has certain permeability to crops, but has no systemic conduction effect, has a wide insecticide spectrum, and acts quickly. Scope of application: It is suitable for the prevention and control of various pests on crops such as rice, cotton, fruit trees, vegetables, soybeans, etc., and is also effective against mites.
Is dimethyl sulfide harmful?
Rabbit skin: 500mg (24h), mild irritation. Rabbit eyes: 259μg (24h), severe irritation. Low concentrations of dimethyl sulfide vapor generally cause nausea and loss of appetite, and high concentrations of vapor have a paralyzing effect on the central nervous system. The vapor is irritating to the nasopharynx, causing coughing and chest discomfort. Continuous or high concentration inhalation causes headaches, nausea, and vomiting. Liquid or mist is irritating to the eyes and can cause dermatitis. The production process must be closed to prevent running, bubbling, dripping, and leaking. The production site should be ventilated and operators should wear protective equipment.
