Steps:
Intermediate 1-2: 1-(1-bromoethyl)-3-nitrobenzene
To a solution of 1-(3-nitrophenyl)ethanol 1-1 (2.5 g, 15.0 mmol) in dichloromethane (30 mL) was added tribromophosphine (1.5 mL, 16.0 mmol) under nitrogen atmosphere at 0 . After stirring at 0 for 2 hours, the mixture was adjusted to pH 8 with saturated sodium bicarbonate aqueous solution, then extracted with dichloromethane (50 mL) twice. The combined organic layer was washed with brine (100 mL) and dried over Na 2SO 4 (s) and filtered. The filtrate was concentrated to give the title compound 1-2 (2.5 g, 95 %purity from HNMR, 69 %yield) as light yellow oil. 1HNMR (400 MHz, CDCl 3) δ 8.35 -8.26 (m, 1H) , 8.17 -8.14 (m, 1H) , 7.79 -7.77 (m, 1H) , 7.54 (t, J = 8.0 Hz, 1H) , 5.24 (q, J = 6.8 Hz, 1H) , 2.08 (d, J = 6.8 Hz, 3H) .
