2.3. Catalyst testing
General procedure: The dehydration reaction was carried out in 5 mL glass vials which contained 5 g of propylene glycol, catalyst (0.25 g of zeolite or 0.043 g of Amberlyst 36Dry), and a stir bar. These vials were sealed with septa and placed in a circular multi-well aluminum heating block. Silicon oil was also used to improve contact between the well and the reactor vials. Temperature was monitored via a thermometer inserted into an identical vial containing propylene glycol and a stir bar. The reaction was carried out at 130 ?C unless otherwise specified. Vials were removed from the oil bath and quenched with ice-water to condense gas-phase products within the vial, and samples were drawn through the septum with a syringe.
