Steps:

Synthesis of 1,3-bis(chlorodimethylsilyl)propane

Chlorodimethylsilane (3.8 mL, 34 mmol) and five droplets of Karstedt’s catalyst (1% in toluene) were added to allylchlorodimethylsilane (3.9 mL, 26 mmol) at 60 °C. After the pale yellow mixture was refluxed for 2 h, all volatile compounds were removed in vacuo. The brownish residue was condensed(20 °C, 310-3 mbar) and 1,3-bis(chlorodimethylsilyl)propane was obtained as a colorless liquid. Yield: 5.22 g (88%). 1H NMR (500 MHz, C6D6): δ = 1.45-1.54 (m, 2H, Si-CH2-CH2), 0.65-0.72 (m, 4H, Si-CH2),0.21 (s, 12H, CH3) ppm. 13C{1H} NMR (125 MHz, C6D6): δ = 22.8 (Si-CH2), 17.3 (Si-CH2-CH2), 1.6 (CH3)ppm. 29Si{1H} NMR (99 MHz, C6D6): δ = 30.3 ppm. MS (EI, 70 eV): m/z [assignment] = 212.9 [M - CH3]+,93.0 [(CH3)2SiCl]+.
