A solution of 2-(cyanomethyl)-3-methylbenzoic acid (1.90 g, 10.85 mmol) dissolved in phosphorus oxychloride (3.33 g, 21.69 mmol) was treated with phosphorus pentachloride (2.26 g, 10.85 mmol) at 0 °C under a nitrogen atmosphere. The resulting mixture was stirred at 0 °C for 2 hours before stirring at ambient temperature for 3 days. The reaction mixture was carefully quenched into ice water (250 mL) and extracted into DCM (300 mL). The organic layer was dried over MgSO4, filtered and evaporated to afford crude 1,3-dichloro-5-methylisoquinoline (1.60 g, 70%) as a tan solid. The material was used without further purification.
