EXAMPLE 3A This example illustrates the preparation of 1,4-dibromo-1,1,2-trifluorobutane. A solution of 4-bromo-1,1,2-trifluorobut-1-ene (2.5 g) in dry dichloromethane (25 cm3) at 0° C. was treated with HBr gas for 45 minutes. The reaction mixture was then stirred at 0° C. for 1 hour. The reaction mixture was made alkaline with 5% NaHCO3 solution and extracted twice with dichloromethane. The combined dichloromethane extracts were dried (MgSO4), filtered and concentrated under reduced pressure to give a pale yellow liquid (2.84 g). The material was shown by gc analysis to be greater than 99% pure. 1 H NMR (CDCl3): δ4.75-5.07(1H,m); 3.42-3.69(2H,m); 2.59-2.15(2H,m).
