1,2-Dibromoethane (23.5 mmol) was added to a solution of 2,5-dibromophenol (23.8 mmol) in acetonitrile (20 mL) and 1.15 M sodium hydroxide in water (20 mL) and the reaction mixture was heated at reflux for 16 h. The reaction mixture was concentrated to ½ volume and was extracted with ethyl acetate (3 x 50 mL). The combined organic layers were dried (sodium sulfate) and concentrated. The residue was purified by Flash chromatography (1/10 ethyl acetate/hexane) to provide 1 ,4-dibromo-2-(2- bromoethoxy)benzene in 49% yield as a white solid.
